Hair Fall - Causes and Prevention Tips by Dr.Pauls

Hair fall is always an issue among the general public. Each person at some point of time or the other in their life has to deal with hair fall. There are many different reasons behind hair loss among men and women. Some of the common features that have been identified along the course of research are stress, tension, underlying medical or health problems, or the lifestyle led by the person.

The reason behind this hair fall might be different in each person’s case. Another reason could be genetic also. Stress and anxiety are one of the major reasons for drastic hair loss. Currently, we are amidst a worldwide pandemic (the COVID-19 pandemic) which has largely contributed to making us stress about the well being of ourselves and our near and dear ones. People are also becoming anxious about losing their jobs and over other daily issues. Hair fall in these times can be triggered as a bad effect of this stress and anxiety that the people are undergoing on a daily basis. These might lead to the three following conditions - Alopecia areata, Telogen effluvium, and Trichotillomania. In all of these conditions, people experience hair fall.

In Alopecia areata, our body’s immune system attacks our hair follicles and degrades them. It sometimes causes the thinning of our hair, or sometimes even leads to drastic hair loss. Although it is kind of an autoimmune attack, stress and anxiety might trigger it to a larger scale.

In Telogen effluvium, hair loss is temporary. It is because the hair follicles go into a ‘resting phase’. The hair loss can be aggravated by the anxiety and stress as they release cortisol from the adrenal glands which eventually causes our hair to fall. but by maintaining a healthy lifestyle the hair can be grown back.

In trichotillomania people under stress tend to pull out their own hairs from the scalp or from their faces. It is very common among teenagers to do this as coping with a mechanism for their stress. People dealing with these problems should go and consult their personal doctors.
Other hair loss problems can be due to underlying medical conditions such as cancer, polycystic ovarian syndrome, lupus, and thyroid-related issues, etc. Among adolescents, eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia also becomes a major cause for the loss of hair in addition to the stress and anxiety to do better and achieve success.

In order to prevent or lessen the hair fall, a few tips that are mentioned below can help people out. They are as follows -

  • People should treat their hair with utmost care while washing, maintaining, and styling it. Proper products should be used to maintain the hair.

  • They should lead an active lifestyle, exercise regularly, and manage their stress in this way.

  • People should practice meditation and other such techniques for regulating and avoiding stress.

  • They should eat a healthy and proper diet and take multivitamins if recommended by the doctor.

  • If the problem aggravates then people should consult with a proper doctor for further guidance.
